1 – The T-shirt in winter :
> The origins of a garment which has passed down
the years creating new trends
> The story goes back to the 19th century when it started as
an under garment replacing the Union Suit.
It served then as a means of avoiding the irritation caused by the suits worn by men at the time.
It was first adopted by British and American soldiers in the 20’s.
Then the US Navy integrated it into its uniform for reasons of comfort and hygiene.
In the mid 40’s the GI rapidly popularised it in Europe.
It was only in 1942 that it took its classic shape of crew neck and short sleeves.
It was then known as the T-type shirt.
> Thanks to the American film stars of the 40’s and 50’s such as Marlon Brando
and James Dean, the shirt in the shape of a T became popular.
The garment was appreciated for its well cut tight fitting form, highlighting the male chest
thus giving a seductive aspect to a simple and practical garment.
> Traditionally made of cotton, it has short sleeves with a round neck wide enough
for the head to pass through easily.
It differs from the shirt by it lack of a collar and buttons.
Sometimes it has a sewn on pocket on the left.
> Since the 80’s and the hip-hop era the t-shirt comes in more ample, extra large versions.
Every year new models of t-shirts appear, for men and women,
with new materials, sizes, colours, motifs, designs, forms …
this garment is regularly renewed and adapts to the trends of the moment.
> But … wouldn’t it be better if it was the origin of a new trend ?
This is the idea of the designer/stylist Charles Landston,
which allows her to be the originator of the exclusive and innovating Art-T. The T-shirt reinvented !
The Art-T … a work of living graphic art of emotions, an extraordinary story of the modernistic vision of a visionary artist/stylist.
The Art-T, the timeless and indispensible item of your wardrobe,
to put you ahead of the fashion, to mark you out and enhance your style !
2 – Why wear a T-shirt in winter ?
> Before learning how to wear a T-shirt in winter let’s look at why
it’s interesting to wear a T-shirt in winter.
When the freezing cold weather arrives, there is a rule on how to keep warm
which people in Scandinavia and sports people know and respect.
> It’s the 3 layers of clothes rule :
- the bottom layer: this is nearest to the body so as to keep you warm.
It avoids any direct pull on the skin and evacuates the humidity of the skin.
It is with this layer that is interesting to wear the T-shirt in winter. - the isolating layer : this layer contains air heated by the body thus isolating it.
- a wind breaking waterproofing layer : this layer blocks the wind and rain
thus not allowing the isolating layer to become wet.
> Another basic rule can be added to the rule of 3 :
- NEVER get wet : either from the exterior by rain and snow
or from the interior by sweating.Because wet clothes evacuate the heat and you will become cold quickly !
These two basic and essential rules will protect you from the cold no matter what you wear.
Either for street clothes or sports outfits, the rules are the same. It’s just a question of superposition !
But for your street clothes we will talk of the Art of Superposition !
But before that, let’s see which garments suit for which layer ?
3 – What clothes to wear in each of the rule of 3 layers ?
> For the basic layer :
– It is advised to wear, next to the skin
- a cotton T-shirt (if you don’t practice sport).
This will keep you warm and evacuate a moderate amount of perspiration.
The cotton absorbs moisture but will dry very slowly and
when wet it will do the opposite and chill you. - a T-shirt in merino wool is ideal for skiing and all other outdoor sporting activities
such as walking as it absorbs moisture less easily than cotton. It can also used as every day wear if it’s necessary to go from a hot to a cold environment such as , getting off the metro.
- a microfibre T-shirt can be worn during all activities , urban or sporting.
This t-shirt is « breathing » and is like a second skin, controlling the temperature of the body according to the seasons and the environment.
It guarantees your everyday well being, as it absorbs body humidity while keeping you warm in winter and cool in the summer because it has the capacity to temporise body temperature
and dry extremely quickly.
> With this layer, the T-shirt in winter is very important.
> For the isolating layer :
– It is advised to wear
- a knitted cotton garment- is there is no risk of sweating.
It works like the cotton T-shirt - a knitted natural wool garment because it will trap air in its stitches and fibres.
This high quality natural wool garment has the capacity to keep its isolating properties even when wet.
Having said that, however it is better to avoid wetting this isolating layer! - a garment which contains wool with other natural or synthetic fibers
- a light leather garment such as a waistcoat which could be worn over the other garment
> For the wind breaker and/or waterproof layer :
– It is advised to wear
- an oiled cotton garment
- a perfecto, a jacket or a leather overcoat
- a high quality polyester microfiber garment
or other high quality garment using technical materials for specific activities - a trench-coat or raincoat or a garment specially for sailing
- a feather lined garment containing a mixture of down and small feathers
- a jacket or overcoat in reversed calfskin
- a fur garment
> To complete an outfit of any kind one must consider the the neck area and the extremities, feet and hands !
It’s for that it is important to have high quality shoes, scarves and gloves !
Nothing like the highest quality to keep you warm.
> When you are warm you feel good in mind and body. You are smiling !
That’s what makes you a happy man or woman !

> The superpositioning of clothes has several advantages.
It permits :
- keeping the body warm with the T-shirt in winter
- Improving the look making it unique, generous and chic
- Conceiving new styles by artistically mixing textures, colours and graphics
> The secret of the art of superpositioning is just a matter of balance and proportion.
There are a few basic rules however :
- superimpose layers from thinner to thicker
- Mix light and heavy materials
- Play around with volumes and lengths
- Keep within the same colour range, neutral or colored
- Wear only one heavy garment
- Finish up by adding a scarf
5 – The t-shirt imposes itself as the flagship !
> The moment has come for relaxing office worker dress codes, including
for members of parliament who from July 2017 are officially released from wearing a tie during sessions !
So as a tie is no longer obligatory, neither is the shirt.
It can be replaced under the jacket by a light pullover.
> But henceforth it’s the T-shirt which will impose itself and take the place of honour !
